Energy awareness is beneficial for the economy, the country, and our environment. Reducing energy consumption is, however, only part of the effort. Electricity is generated in real-time by generating stations (hydro, coal, oil, nuclear, wind, solar, etc.) and any excess produced cannot be stored for use at a later time. Electric energy that comes out of a generating station not used in real-time is lost.

Increased electricity demand thus increases the need for generating stations and adversely affects the price of the commodity. Electricity is traded, much like sugar or crude oil, and prices are set for each 5-minute interval depending on market indicators such as demand, supply, transmission & distribution and many other factors.

While saving energy is responsible, belaying use of electricity from high price times to lower price intervals is smart; it can result in tremendous benefits for the consumer and society at large. Imagine the effect on electricity prices if 25% of the households in New York State would decide not to engage their electric dryers at a time of peak usage. The supply would exceed the demand, prices would come down dramatically, and the distribution grid would be spared an otherwise unavoidable surge.
